Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959)
Born in Rio de Janeiro on March 5, 1887 Heitor Villa-Lobos is considered in Brazil as well as abroad as the father of Brazilian music. His music is remarkable as much by its originality as by its sheer quantity: over a thousand works which cover a wide and diverse range of genres. But it is the compositions for his two favourite instruments which made him so popular: the guitar and the cello.
Two world-famous Brazilian artists are now bringing us their recording of Villa-Lobos’ entire works for cello and piano. For thirty years Cristina Ortiz has been delighting audiences with her passionate and colourful performances which are so characteristic of her Brazilian cultural heritage, performing with most world-class orchestras. Following the success of Alma Brasileira (INTRA016), a solo CD of works by five Brazilian composers, Intrada have continued their collaboration with this delightful pianist. On this CD she accompanies Antonio Meneses, one of the most remarkable cellists of his generation, gifted with a warm and generous timbre, and a member of the Beaux Arts Trio since 1998.
NEW: Cristina Ortiz’ 1 st orchestral recording of the Piano Concertos 1 & 2 by Shostakovich (with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Paavo Berglund) plus the Three Fantastic Danses for piano solo, has just been re-released by EMI France. |
